In July RAF Coningsby held a ‘RAFAthon’ to raise funds in aid of the Royal Air Force Association (RAFA) Wings Appeal. This is an annual event organised by some RAF stations, where participants run a combined distance of a Marathon as individuals or in teams.
The fastest time to complete the distance was by Team ‘Engineering and Logistics Warrant Officers’ consisting of: Warrant Officers Steve Brown, Pete Wood and Keith Keen in 3hrs 55mins; they also raised a fantastic £115 in the process. ‘Quality and Continuous Improvement Mavericks’, a team of six headed up by Sergeant Alan McGee finished the marathon in 3hrs 58 mins. The ‘Air Traffic Control’ Team made a fantastic effort of completing 35 miles between them.
The standout effort of the day was by Squadron Leader Richard Lendon from the Medical Centre who completed the whole marathon singlehandedly; running past the 25 metre range no less than 54 times; in 3hrs 59 mins; he raised over £200 for RAFA.
Air Traffic Control Officer, Fg Off Ben Wadd, who organised the event, said: “Everyone ran the event with a smile on their face, or was that a grimace?” He added: “It was a phenomenal effort; my congratulations go to all involved.”
Station RAFA Liaison Officer, SAC Sharleen Merritt said: “We are delighted to have the total sum of £480 raised for the RAFA Wings Appeal.”
