17 (CONINGSBY) SQN – AIR TRAINING CORPS SPRING ACTIVITIES 2015

FOR THOSE WHO MAY NOT BE AWARE, OR ARE NEW TO RAF CONINGSBY, THE STATION HAS ITS VERY OWN AIR TRAINING CORPS (ATC) SQUADRON WHICH PARADES TWICE WEEKLY, ON A TUES AND THURS EVENING, FROM THE TRAINING DEVELOPMENT FLIGHT BETWEEN 7PM AND 9.30PM.

This year has, as usual, been extremely busy with the events calendar full for most weekends between now and the end of the summer.

Events this year have so far included a 4 day visit to Portsmouth, taking in the Historic Dockyard and Submarine and Explosives Museums, whilst staying on-board HMS Bristol, a live working, crew training ship for the Royal Navy. April saw us say goodbye to Padre Mike Hall, who has supported the Squadron throughout his time at Coningsby, in the form of a Dining Out night held in the Junior Ranks Mess. This Dining In Night was followed by a number of cadets doing a Duke of Edinburgh Bronze expedition in the grounds of the Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa.

At the end of April, Squadron cadets were joined by Grantham Squadron for a ‘Greens’ Camp in Vigo Woods training area at RAF Wittering. The weekend was a huge success with a Staff vs Cadets Night Exercise lasting well past midnight on Saturday.

With regular flying opportunities with the Air Experience Flight at RAF Cranwell, and Wing Athletics and Field Day competitions to look forward to, it is a busy season for both staff and cadets alike. As of last September, the age to join the cadets has dropped to 12 years old, although those over 16 years may go on overseas or exchange camps. If anyone is interested in joining our vibrant, challenging and exciting Squadron, please contact the Squadron Commander, Flt Lt (VRT) Rob Eyre at OC.17@aircadets. org, or the Senior Service Instructor, FS Paul Fido, on Ext 7428.
