29(R) Sqn UPDATE

January and February were, once again, busy months for 29(R) Squadron. We graduated our first course under the revised OPCON syllabus, the RSTF started the Instructor work-up phase and the QWIC course began their airborne training.

We congratulate to the recent course completers of OPCON8.

The graduates were Sqn Ldr Andy Chisholm (11 Sqn), Flt Lt Guy Hart (3 Sqn), Flt Lt Jim Calvert (6 Sqn) and Flt Lt Mark Robertson (29 Sqn). Sqn Ldr Chisholm was awarded best all around student. We wish them fair winds and following seas as they officially join the Typhoon Force.

Additional OPCON training is proceeding in earnest as OPCON8A are expected to graduate in March. OPCON9 has already entered the combat phase with OPCON10 to join the squadron from TTF. We also welcomed back Sqn Ldr Simon Batt and Sqn Ldr Charlie Mathews, who are quickly working through the Refresher syllabus.

The QWIC course have also been busy recently. They have completed their combat phase, which focused on HEA implementation and WVR tactics. They are now shifting focus to four ship AD tactics including DCA and OCA missions.

In February the squadron hosted two VIP visits; The Rt Hon George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer and Mr Peter Luff, Minister of Defence for Equipment, Support and Technology. Both gentlemen were impressed with the Typhoon’s performance and capabilities.

No doubt spring will be another busy season for 29(R) as we continue to deliver the task.

Lt Heath Hoppes, USN
