When The planning committee was arranging the exhibitors for Families’ Day 2012, little did they realise they would need to book a rather large wooden boat capable of carrying pairs of animals escaping the floods. Wet, wet, wet proved to be the theme of the day!

Saturday 16th June saw RAF Coningsby host a fun filled and action packed day for personnel and their families. Considerable effort had been made by members of the planning team to ensure an exciting flying programme and a wide variety of ground based entertainment and hospitality.  With over 5000 tickets issued prior to the event, everything looked set for a great day, and then it rained…

As the saying goes, the show must go on and the staying power of the thousands who came was rewarded with superb flying displays by aircraft including 6 Sqn Typhoon Display, XV Sqn Role Demo Tornado GR4, The Blades Aerobatic Display Team, 101 Sqn VC10, Royal Navy Historic Flight Sea Fury, 45 Sqn King Air Display, 5 Sqn Sentinel, 28 Sqn Merlin and The RAF Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows. These excellent displays were made all the more impressive given the low cloud base, winds and reduced visibility and thrilled the many who had braved the showers which only seem to materialise when an aircraft got airborne!

Ground based exhibitors and caterers had arrived from far and wide to provide an exciting array of entertainments, demonstrations, music, food and refreshments. An excellent collection of modern and vintage cars, have-a-go archery, Typhoon Simulator, Bouncy Castle, Station Fire Section Display and PEd Flt Climbing Wall were just of few of the activities on offer. And just in case people were feeling a bit damp and cold, Caribbean curry was available from one of the many catering vendors to warm the parts other curries couldn’t reach!

All proceeds from the day have been donated to the Station Charities Fund to support a number of local good causes.

Special thanks go to the event sponsors without whose generous and invaluable support, much of the entertainment could not have been provided:

MBDA UK Limited, SELEX Galileo, BAE System (Operations) Limited, ISS Facility Services Defence, Rolls Royce PLC, Lincolnshire Co-operative Limited and Banovallum Veterinary Group.
