After an extremely successful season in 2012/13 which saw the RAF Coningsby Cricket team reach two Cup finals, the upcoming season is filled with much promise in spite losing a number of key players in the off season.

The team has managed to get together for several ‘nets’ training sessions as well as playing and winning our opening match against Chetwynd Garrison. The team play their home games in Caythorpe village and this was the setting for the first game. On a glorious Wednesday afternoon (1 May 13) with Caythorpe bathed in sunshine, conditions were perfect. With a weakened batting lineup, Coningsby were keen to bowl first, however, after losing the toss we were forced to have a bat.

The innings started badly with 4 wickets falling in quick succession and with very few runs on the board it looked like being a torrid afternoon for the Coningsby team. This was not to be the case, SAC’s French and Smith steadied the ship with scores of 33 and 23 respectively, this combined with a valiant effort from Coningsby’s ‘tailend’ ensured that a respectable tally of 140 all out off 31.5 overs was achieved.

With a strong bowling attack, Coningsby went into field after tea in confident mood. This confidence combined with excellent morale was to bear fruit. SAC ‘Ollie’ Smith followed up a strong performance with the bat, and took 2 early wickets. 3 more Chetwynd wickets fell in short order and Coningsby were firmly in the driving seat. Final bowling figures of 3-14 for Smith and 3-16 for ‘Matty’ Elwood, saw Chetwynd bowled out for 71 off 22.1 overs, meaning a 69 run victory for Coningsby.

The team has a number of fixtures through the Summer and are looking for keen players.  If anyone is interested in playing or just giving it a go, please contact Flt Lt J Lynch, 7 FP Wg, on Ext 7192, or Sgt Matt Charles, Typhoon MSC, on Ext 8078. Nets sessions are normally held on Monday 1700-1830hrs behind the WO and Sgt’s Mess.
