An excellent  Year!

At RAF Coningsby we are very fortunate to be surrounded by some of the best golf courses in the country, and the quality of those courses reflects the strength of golf on station.

We regularly field two teams in regional RAF golf leagues and compete very successfully in both team and individual competitions. The RAF Coningsby golf society continues to thrive as the members enjoy monthly golf days at exceptionally good value for money.  Here is a breakdown of the achievements for 2012 across all areas.

1st Team – East Midlands Golf League (EMGL)

Another extremely successful season for the Station 1st team competing in the East Midlands Golf League (EMGL) retaining their title for the 3rd consecutive year, with a record of Played 10 won 8 and lost 2, with a lot down to the contributions of MVP’s Steve Cartwright and Dom Banks who’s records this year were outstanding. It was a really competitive team this year with many representing the Station so thank you to all who contributed and also well done to those from the 2nd Team who made the step up to the 1st Team and played in multiple fixtures.  MVP Steve Cartwright also went on to make an appearance with 1st Team Captain Paul Foulkes in the Vulcan Trophy match v Newark making successful contributions to the winning team.  More success came in the form of pairing Kieran Nevin and Paul Holliday who won yet another competition, the Waddington Shield at Belton Park.  Paul also managed to add the Station Championships to his haul of titles for this season so congratulations to him.  Later in the year a team was entered into the Inter Station Handicap and Scratch Qualifier with the Dream Team comprising of Daz Gould, Aaron Ashberry, Liam Pucil and Kieran Nevin who wiped the floor with the competition and qualifying for the final with ease.  Unfortunately the same Dream Team were unable to play in the final due to call ups to the RAF and Combined Services team, however Dream Team 2 comprising of  Paul Foulkes, Kieran Nevin, Liam Pucill and Dom Banks managed a credible 3rd.

On an individual note congratulations go to SAC Aaron Ashberry who continues to justify his tag as Coningsby’s No1 player and now a key member of the RAF team, continuing his meteoric rise up the rankings by winning the Central Regional Scratch Championships and going on to be this year’s RAF Champion.  Aaron overcame difficult conditions at Formby GC in July to beat challenges of many including his team mates at RAF Coningsby and the RAF Team, Darren Gould, Liam Pucill and Paul Holliday.

Aaron has participated in many RAF representative fixtures and was part of the RAF Team with fellow RAF Coningsby golfers Darren Gould and Liam Pucill who triumphed in the Inter Services Championships defeating the Army and the Navy well done fellas.  It isn’t just RAF representative golf Aaron has been chosen for he has also been selected for the Combined Services Team, going on to maintain a 100% record in the matches he played.  he has also represented Lincolnshire so it would seem the sky is the limit for this young talented golfer; watch out Rory!  Ash is gonna get ya!!  Although he needs to work on his choice of outfits before he turns pro as he does have some rather fetching Farah slacks he’s fond of!!!  Other notable achievements from individuals from RAF Coningsby were Kieran Nevin, Liam Pucill and Paul Holliday who also successfully represented the RAF this year in numerous fixtures, so well done to them too.

With all these quality players already and with many making the step up from the 2nd Team it looks like the 1st Team are in a strong position to retain the League Trophy next season; here’s hoping anyway.

2nd Team – East Midlands Alliance League (EMAL)

A very busy 2012 for the Station 2nd team competing in the East Midlands Alliance League (EMAL).  The EMAL is aimed at those players with a handicap of 9.5 and above, both Ladies and Gents RAF and Civilian MOD Contractors are eligible to participate. The primary aim is to introduce the game of golf to as many personnel as possible and to ensure that from the outset they are taught the rules, protocols and etiquette of the game. The secondary aim is to provide a competitive league to maintain members’ interest in the game and to enable them to improve their handicaps by playing opponents with similar levels of ability and develop players to be eligible to compete for the 1st Team. This season we have had 37 Players register an interest in representing the station with 31 of those participating in at least one fixture, many have substantially reduced there handicaps over the season with the odd increase!!!  In the league the Team got off to a strong start topping the table in the early stages, however a few narrow defeats soon followed, two of which were at the hands of our local rivals Waddington (by 1 point on both occasions), meant the Team finished a credible 3rd in the League with a record of Played 12 Won 7 Lost 4 Drew 1.  A good result considering the amount of diversions placed on the unit.  The team’s good form continued into the cup competitions narrowly losing out to RAFC Cranwell in the semi-final of the Challenge Cup; however some valiant efforts at Stapleford Park meant the Team retained the Challenge Trophy and at the Station Championships’ Mark Wilson managed to walk away with the Gross competition so congratulations to him.

During the season we also entered players into the RAFGA Central Regional’s at Newark GC with Jon Cox-Tomlinson summoning up all his banditry powers to win the Net Competition, walking away with a nice trophy and more golf equipment to replace the previously temper damaged items!!

In August we were able to field 2 teams in the Inter Station Scratch and Handicap Central Regional Qualifier at Belton Park GC.  Some blistering golf in the morning round by the teams consisting of Shaun Smythe, Si Smith, Arthur Daley, Barry Brown and Steve Deveson, Jon Cox-Tomlinson, Gary Williams and Bill Laing meant both Teams were in contention to qualify for the finals at the halfway point.  Unfortunately as fatigue set in during the afternoon round, the golf wasn’t quite as good with only one team in contention as the competition was coming to a close.  With all but 2 teams in the Clubhouse, RAF Coningsby (A) were in 2nd Place for the Handicap Section with only a Waddington Lower handicap team able to beat them to the coveted final slot.  Suffice to say the tension was palpable and as the team watched Waddington come down the 18th confidence was high as surely they would have to have played a blinder to beat us………….Yep they played a blinder and once again we were denied at the hands of a Waddington team, damn you Waddington we shall have our revenge next year!!

On a positive note it was great to see the interaction between the 1st Team and 2nd Team greatly improve; although this was in some doubt at the start of the season as the 2nd Team wiped the floor with there 1st Team counterparts which included the soon to be RAF Champion and many of the RAF Representative players, winning the Captains Challenge Trophy upsetting all the odds!!  (Very well stacked odds in our favour due to the massive handicap differences!! But that’s what handicaps are there for!)

The close ties between both teams bared dividends as a number of players from the 2nd Team made the step up to the 1st Team and played in multiple fixtures in the EMGL to fill the gaps left by many of there star players being unavailable due to RAF or Combined Services commitments thus helping the 1st Team retain there league title. Our congratulations go to Captain Paul Foulkes and all those who represented the 1st Team, another great season for them.

A big thank you goes to all that turned up and represented the 2nd Team this year, you all played your part and hopefully next year we will continue in the same vain and bring some more trophies home.

Membership of RAF Coningsby Golf Society is currently available to all personnel interested in golf, whatever the standard. In addition to away days and coaching, there are preferential rates offered by some of Lincolnshire’s finest courses to Society Members and include Woodhall Spa (Hotchkin and Bracken), Boston, Boston West and Blankney. Membership costs £30 per annum and attracts the following benefits:

  • Preferential Course Rates.
  • Participation in all Society events at subsidised rates.
  • RAFGA coaching at subsidised rates.

Last year saw some well attended summer outings to: Norwood, Greetham Valley, Market Rasen and Spalding with only one outing missed due to the extremely wet weather!  The usual suspect Paul “gran tiburón blanco” Nicholson once again walked away with the Summer Championship Trophy; obviously he has far too much time on his hands now he has retired and lots of money burning a hole in his pocket for extra lessons!!

As usual the Society continues to play all year round and dates have been planned for the winter competition to; Woodhall Spa (Both courses), South Kyme, Boston West and Belton Park so enrolment will continue with £10 Memberships available up to April when the season starts again.

All in all a successful season for all involved with Golf at RAF Coningsby in the Team events, individually and the Golf Society, with the competitive season over and only a couple of winter months to get through before it all starts again if you are interested in representing the Station next season at any level please don’t hesitate in contacting either:
