The Help for Heroes ‘Banger Run’ is an annual driving event where teams from across the UK endeavour to drive thousands of miles across Europe raising money for Help for Heroes.

Twenty-six teams entered and completed the event in 2011; raising over £27,000 for the H4H charity. The rules for the event are quite simple: firstly teams must purchase a car for less than £250; they can then spend as much of their own money as is required to make the car road legal.  Each team must raise a minimum of £200 before the event, but the majority of teams raise much more than this.  Most importantly the event is not a race; it is a driving challenge where teams help nurse their ‘bangers’ to the checkpoints.

Last year the event had a ‘Formula 1’ theme.  Teams drove their cars from Silverstone, Northamptonshire UK to Spa Francorchamps in Belgium where we camped for the first night.  We then progressed through Germany where we had a chance to drive around the legendary Nurburgring and on to Switzerland for the second nights camping.  Day three took us down to Monza in Italy, where several teams were able to sneak into the pit lane during the setup for the Grand Prix.  We then carried on to Monte Carlo in Monaco before camping in France.  The final day took us to the Paul Ricard circuit near Marseille and finally to Circuit de Catalunya just outside of Barcelona in Spain.

Amazingly all teams reached the finishing line; a fantastic achievement which was celebrated in typical fashion with a fantastic meal and plenty of merriment.  Last year I was part of Team ‘41 (R) Banger Project’ our car was a Nissan 100NX with camouflage paintwork, which won the prize for the best dressed car.

This year’s ‘James Bond’ themed event is called ‘Drive another Day’ it is due to take place from 8 – 11 September 2012.  The teams will take in sights such as: Lake Como, Italy; the Furka Pass, and the Contra Dam which was used as a location for the ‘GoldenEye’ film.
