RAF Coningsby LADIES FOOTBALL TEAM
RAF Coningsby Ladies Football Team was formed in 2018 and on 31 July 2019, a selected team of five travelled to RAF Brize Norton to compete in their first ever tournament which was run by TG19 (Catering Flt). The team chosen; consisted of LAC Mollie Hall, LAC Adi Suka, SAC Koren Cox, SAC(T) Natalie Edwards and CT Hailey Ross.
In total there were six ladies’ teams which entered. The girls had two games to play in the group stages, winning the first game with a score of 2-0 with CT Ross scoring both goals and winning the second game 4-0 with all four goals coming from LAC Hall. This meant that their place in the quarter finals was secured.
Progressing into the quarter finals meant playing against the Coningsby Ladies Catering Team, this game was most important mentally due to local rivalry. It was a tough game, but Coningsby Ladies managed to bag another win, beating them 2-0 with both goals from CT Ross.
The semi- finals saw the team face RAF Brize Norton. The game ending in a 1-1 draw, meaning the winner was to be decided by penalty shootout. The win came down to the very last penalty, which saw the girls secure their place in the final.
The final was upon us and the girls were facing a mixed team of players from RAF Waddington and RAF Marham, who had also won all their games, so it was all to play for!
During the first half the girls battled well and held the opposition off, but just minutes before half time the girls conceded a goal. Holding their heads high as they headed into the second half, they pushed through, having few chances on goal, unfortunately a second goal was conceded, and the match ended 2-0, making the tournament winners RAF Waddington/Marham.
This was the team’s first tournament representing RAF Coningsby, and they did a brilliant job, as they won their first trophy as runners up in the tournament. Not only did they manage 2nd place CT Hailey Ross bagged the trophy for the Best Female Player of the tournament trophy!
If you would like to join the team, or even just come and give it a try. The ladies train on the station Astroturf every Tuesday evenings at 1800 – 1930. We welcome all standards and are open to all MOD civilian workers and RAF dependants.
